Hi
If the 171 code you're talking about is the 'P' code esystem then the code should be:-
P0171 System too lean bank 1, with solutions pointing to:- Intake / exhaust leak,AIR system, MAF / VAF sensor, fuel pressure / pump, injectors, HO2S
In my mind I think we're looking at the most probable of the HO2S or Lambda sensor (if the vehicle has done amny miles on this sensor, they 'burn' out) next would be the Mass Air Flow sensor wich also has a tendancy to 'give up' after a 'good life' - if the engine hasn't had the best of attention there is the possibility of an air leak through the intake and / or exhaust systems, If the mieage is high and you're still on the original fuel pump then that becaome a target also.
You may have more than one problem - depending on the level of TLC given to the engine and the mileage!!

The auto electrician I went too, blames the pattern cat for my problems. However I still wanted a second opinion.
I eventually managed to find a mechanic who has worked at bmw dealership for 17 years. He checked out the car with his bmw computer. His findings where that the MAF was not working correctly. His suspisions are that the pattern cat may have damaged the MAF, as the engine cannot breath correctly. He also pointed out the the pattern system i'd had fitted was NOT Bosal, but some crap. Bosal system for my 318i e46 1999 is a 2 part system, they had fitted some crappy 3 part system or very poor quality.
Conclusion is that the guys who fitted the pattern system have to replace the system for a original system (i'll have to pay the difference), then go back to the bmw guy to recheck MAF, hopefully it may settle back down.

Hi,
I drive a BMW E46 316i 105HP 08/1999.
I also have this problem: my MIL is on and as I read the fault codes from the engine ECU I received:
Sent: 12 05 04 01 12
Received: 12 19 A0 01 AB D1 0F 02 28 15 CA 91 49 58
3E C9 92 49 62 00 00 00 00 00 E4
So I have also your problem: 1 fault, fault number is 0xAB = 171. That means "mixture adaptation out of range" you said.
Can I ask you something ? Where did you find this explanation ? Is there an actual "BMW fault code list" on the NET ?
I've also got the following explanations for the code 171:
- intake air leak
- crank case breather valve
- Mass Air Flow (MAF)
- Lambdasensors
Please give me a feedback if you know where I can find the list with BMW trouble codes for my car.
Regards,
Dorin
